The in-store event on Saturday, March 13, formed part of PETstock Assist's inaugural National Pet Adoption Month, a campaign celebrating rescue pets and the foster community.
PETstock Shepparton manager Kylie Higgins said the shop was abuzz with customers throughout the day.
“For the whole four hours, there were people standing around looking — it was really good awareness for the rescue group,” she said.
“Eleven is what they'll adopt out in a month, or two months, not a day.
“It helps move the cats that have been sitting there a little bit longer and people might have overlooked . . . and get some new ones in they wouldn't have been able to take otherwise.”
PETstock Assist’s month-long campaign has seen 165 pets adopted across the state, and 477 adopted nationally since the beginning of March.
This year, pet lovers were encouraged to ‘adopt different’, and shed stereotypes or misconceptions around rescue and foster pets.
“With the cost breeders are charging these days, it's very expensive to buy a pet,” Ms Higgins said.
“The pets that get put up for adoption are just as cute and cuddly and sweet.”
Ms Higgins said since the adoption drive, Goulburn Valley Pet Adoption and Rehoming already had 20 additional cats and kittens looking for a home.
“It gives you an idea of how quickly they turn over,” she said.
“If we had more awareness, and more places willing to hold adoption days, they could help more cats.
“Doing it on their own, they can't afford to promote it as much.”
Ms Higgins thanked the Shepparton community for its support towards ending the cycle of pet homelessness in the Goulburn Valley.
“Even if you didn't find what you're looking for, hopefully we'll do another adoption day in the near future,” she said.
“If you're looking for a new cat, come into the store and we can help you out and lead you in the right direction.”
