The Australian share market has closed higher, buoyed by gains in the materials sector as the major miners look to benefit from falling energy prices.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index finished on the highs of the day on Thursday, up 53.5 points, or 0.81 per cent, to 6648.0. The broader All Ordinaries rose 52.6 points, or 0.78 per cent, to 6836.9.
Meanwhile the Australian dollar remained close to a two-year low against its surging US counterpart. It was buying 68.17 US cents, from 68.18 US cents at Wednesday's close.
