January was wetter than usual — 45.6mm of rain was recorded for the month in the Bureau of Meteorology gauge at the Shepparton airport.
February saw Shepparton experience its hottest day in more than a year when the mercury topped 40.9˚C on Friday, February 17.
It was the first time in 14 months Shepparton experienced a day above 40˚C — the previous being in December 2021.
It was also the only day over 40˚C for the year.
Shepparton’s March was a little warmer than average but far wetter, with nearly 20mm more rain than the average year.
Shepparton had slightly cooler days but warmer nights than usual in April.
The mean maximum temperature during the day in April this year was 21.7ºC, slightly lower than the historical mean of 22.6ºC taken over the past 26 years.
May, however, saw colder days and nights than usual, and rainfall figures were also slightly down on the historical average.
June weather was cold and created what was, at the time, new historical records for both temperature and rainfall.
The month saw a total of 20 days of rainfall and 118mm of rain, well above the historical average of rainfall for June, which sits at 41.9mm.
This also saw a 54.8mm fall on June 8, the most rain ever recorded in one day.
When it came to daytime temperatures, June 21 was one of the coldest days to hit Shepparton since 1995.
The daytime temperature for June 21 reached only 6.6ºC. The last time it stayed so low was on July 9, 1995, when the temperature reached only 6.1ºC and was 6.4ºC the next day.
July seemed like a wet month. There were more rainy days than usual — 15 of them — but the actual rainfall of 25.2mm was less than the historical average.
July days and nights were warmer than average. August also had warmer days and nights than usual.
September veered from historical norms, with the mean daytime maximum temperature being higher than usual at 19.9°C.
It was a notable surge from the average of 18.3°C for the month recorded over the past 26 years.
Shepparton had more than double the historical average rainfall in October.
The highest amount of rain to fall in one day in Shepparton for the month was 65.8mm on Wednesday, October 4.
This is the highest rainfall in a single day in October since records began in Shepparton in 1965.
Following this rainfall, roads such as Watt Rd and Raftery Rd were closed due to flooding.
Compared to November 2022 and historical averages for November daytime temperatures, this year’s 11th month was a warm one.
November saw a slightly higher average daytime maximum temperature of 27.5℃ compared to the historical average of 26.2℃.
December saw total rainfall of 47.2mm up to December 29.
A wild storm lashed the Goulburn Valley on Christmas Eve, with winds of up to 95km/h recorded at Shepparton airport.
Trees were toppled, 5000 homes were left without power and buildings were damaged in the storm.
In the 24 hours until 9am on Christmas Day, 19.6mm of rain was recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology at Shepparton.
In the 24 hours until 9am on Boxing Day, an additional 16.6mm was recorded at Shepparton.
December also saw the highest night-time minimum temperature of 2023, on December 13, at a warm 24.9℃.
