The Victorian Coalition has committed $5 million to upgrade the intersection of Naring Rd and Tocumwal Rd, near Numurkah, if it wins this month’s state election.

Visiting the site, Nationals candidate for Shepparton Shane Sali made the announcement alongside Nationals leader Danny O’Brien and Liberal candidate for Northern Victoria Steve Brooks.
The upgrade follows several crashes at the intersection. Between 2021 and 2025 there were five accidents, injuring seven people.
The proposed upgrade would realign Tocumwal Rd east to create two separate T intersections on Naring Rd, with protected turn lanes, concrete islands, drainage, street lighting and power pole relocation.
The existing crossroads is just 20 metres from a freight rail crossing with static signs only, leaving insufficient space for a B-double to wait clear of the intersection.
Mr O’Brien said the location was chosen after intense lobbying from Moira Shire Council and the local community.
“This is part of our commitment to regional Victoria to make sure that we’re getting the infrastructure that we need, that we’re fixing the roads to make them safer,” he said.
Mr Sali said he wanted to prioritise issues that were important to the local community.
“This intersection has been identified as a serious safety risk, and the community deserves to see it fixed,” he said.
Mr O’Brien said the announcement was part of a broader push to improve the safety of the state’s roads as part of a $5 billion road maintenance plan.
“We’ve seen across the state just the deterioration of our roads more generally in terms of the surface, potholes everywhere, roads cracking up, patching everywhere, road shoulders breaking up — this is not good enough,” he said.
He added that works would begin as “quickly as possible” within the first term of a Coalition government.
