ERH orthopaedic surgeon Senthil Rengasamy recently performed the hospital’s first robotic-assisted knee replacement procedure using the DePuy Synthes VELYS Robotic-Assisted system.
The VELYS system uses an infrared camera and advanced sensors to collect live data during surgery, allowing for real-time adjustments without needing pre-operative CT scans.
“The technology allows us to personalise each knee replacement to a patient’s unique anatomy and provides valuable information throughout the operation,” Mr Rengasamy said.
“While the surgeon remains in complete control, the robotic platform assists with planning and execution, helping to achieve precise implant positioning and balance within the knee joint.
“This level of accuracy has the potential to improve patient outcomes, enhance recovery and help patients return to the activities they enjoy.”
ERH chief executive Carol-Anne Lever said the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery reflected the health service's commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare closer to home.
ERH is among the first regional public hospitals in Victoria to offer robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery.
