Akers elected as new mayor of Greater Shepparton

Each will serve a one-year term.

“It’s a real privilege to have the opportunity to serve as mayor,” Cr Akers said.

In his acceptance speech, Cr Akers recognised the diversity of Greater Shepparton and emphasised the need for Shepparton’s infrastructure to keep up with its development.

Cr Akers said in his term as mayor, he would lead “a council that listens, a council that leads, a council that gets things done”.

A dairy farmer from Tallygaroopna, Cr Akers is serving his first term as a councillor. His family has lived in Greater Shepparton for over a century.

Cr Schubert, who represents the Midland Ward, thanked his fellow councillors for their support.

The position of mayor became vacant after Shane Sali announced that he would be contesting the November 28 Victorian election.

Mr Sali is currently on a leave of absence from his duties as a councillor.
