Recycled water to be released

Recycled water will be released from Goulburn Valley Water’s Tongala wastewater management facility, as it nears capacity after recent rainfall.

Goulburn Valley Water will release fully treated recycled water from its Tongala wastewater management facility over the coming weeks, following recent high rainfall.

On site recycled water storages at the facility are nearing capacity after wet conditions limited opportunities to use recycled water for irrigation.

Rainfall in March reduced recycled water use towards the end of the previous irrigation season, while wet conditions throughout June, July and August have continued to increase storage levels ahead of the irrigation season.

Four to six megalitres of Environment Protection Authority Class C recycled water will be released each day into the Goulburn-Murray Water Main Drain, part of the Mosquito Depression drainage system which flows into the Deakin Drain.

GVW’s wastewater quality co-ordinator Stuart Harris said these controlled releases would prevent uncontrolled overflows and protect critical infrastructure.

“The releases will continue until lagoon levels are returned to a safe and manageable level,” Mr Harris said.

The release is expected to begin in late August and continue through to October.

GVW has notified the EPA of the releases and will work with them to monitor for any potential environmental impacts.
