Featuring words of wisdom beyond its authors’ years, the exhibition ‘Words by Tatura Primary’ has become the Walkway Gallery’s most talked about display to date.

The exhibition, located inside Tatura Community House, is the first of its kind to be put on by local students.
The works inside showcase poems from more than 50 Year 5 and 6 students from Tatura Primary School in a display that has locals returning for more.
“People love reading all the individual poems,” Walkway Gallery manager Tom Boocock said.
“Because there is so many, people have actually come back for multiple visits to finish reading them all.”
The number of returning visitors has left gallery staff describing this exhibition as the gallery’s most popular display.
And if reading isn’t your thing, the gallery provides an audio display of the students reading their own poem in the foyer, so visitors can just take a chair and listen.
Year 5/6 teacher and team leader Lauren Wangeman said the exhibition came from establishing community partnerships and teaching the children to be part of their community.
“I think it’s a nice way for them to connect with the community and for everyone to see the voices of our local children,” she said.
Students spent five weeks working through different poetry forms, from haikus and free verse to narratives, before the final two weeks were left open for students to have free rein over their final piece.
The Year 5 and 6 students said they felt “really good” about being able to see, and more importantly, show their families their work in a public display.
The exhibition is open at Tatura Community House’s Walkway Gallery on weekdays from 9am to 3pm until September 18.
