One week after the discovery of Kumanjayi Little Baby’s body in Alice Springs, the Shepparton community will hold a vigil at Queen’s Gardens on Thursday, May 7 from 5.30pm.
Shepparton vigil organiser Chrissie Chirgwin said as a mother and an Aboriginal woman, the five-year-old’s death had hit close to home.
“As a normal person with a beating heart, it affects me. I think many people would say the same,” she said.
“Collectively, Australians are grieving.”
Mrs Chirgwin said the vigil was a chance for the community to grieve together.
“It’ll go for about 30 minutes, but people are welcome to stay longer if they need more time to sit and reflect,” she said.
“It is all about showing respect … it’s not a place to argue, not a place to debate, just a place where all Australians can be together.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring a candle and wear something pink.
Candlelit vigils for Kumanjayi Little Baby will be held across the country.
