The Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association season drew to a close at the weekend with the region’s resident aces serving up some memorable grand finals at Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club.

Headlining the last day of on-court action for the campaign was a GM2 finale of epic proportions between McEwen Reserve and Kyabram Bombers, one that ended with games tied at 62 apiece and the pennant decided on sets.
Tanner Hunter and Josh Mei landed the first blows 6-0 and 6-2 before Sheree Starling ensured the Bombers opened up their account.
Cathy O’Brien extended McEwen’s early advantage but the Kyabram combination of Regan More and David Starling notched an 8-3 triumph to pull the Bombers within striking distance.

Mei and Tim Comer scored another valuable set for McEwen but were quickly undone by Sheree Starling and Justine McConnell, and the Bombers gained the lead for the first time through David Starling and McConnell in the ninth rubber.
Hunter and O’Brien’s teamed up for an 8-3 win in the penultimate set that ensured the difference heading into the final tie was a single game, but Comer and Elizabeth Webster’s 8-7 final stand pulled McEwen back level to finish on 62 games.
But with six sets to Kyabram’s five, McEwen were judged winners of an epic grand final.
In GM2 Open, Tongala wrapped up a near faultless season with a 7-67 to 4-40 win over Cobram, while Kyabram didn’t walk away from Welsford St empty-handed after the Bombers’ GM3 outfit defeated Karramomus 7-66 to 3-49.
An arm wrestle between the Tatura Twisters and Tongala in the GM4 Open division went the way of the Twisters, taking out the grade with a 6-61 to 3-43 victory.
