Community unites for charity water walk

Local schools and community members are gearing up for a charity walk, in solidarity with impoverished people from around the world.

The Big Water Walk is an initiative created by Caritas, a Catholic charity that raises funds for disadvantaged communities.

The event encourages participants to remember those in poorer countries who need to carry and fetch clean water, often walking more than five kilometres each day.

This year, St Mary’s parish will once again be taking part in collaboration with St Joseph’s College and St Mary’s Primary School, with about 100 students from each school joining the walk.

Participants will carry buckets of water from St Mary’s Parish to St Mary’s Primary School to symbolise the daily struggle faced by many people around the world in accessing clean water.

From 10.30am on Thursday, March 19, the event will begin with a short liturgy and opening program at St Mary’s Parish before walkers set off from St Mary’s Church.

At 12:30pm, once all participants arrive at St Mary’s Primary School, there will be a brief presentation followed by a sausage sizzle.

All community members are also invited to participate in the event.
