Swim stars stand tall at sports day

An incredible day was had by Mathoura Public School students as they took part in their annual swimming carnival at the Mathoura pool recently.

The sun was shining and spirits were high as students lined up nervously for their first events.

The sound of the starter echoed throughout the town as students dived into the water, determined to reach the finish line first.

The sub-junior students enjoyed a fun-filled day, arriving at the pool in Hawaiian-themed outfits.

They showcased their dance moves before participating in various novelty events and races across the pool.

Many of the younger students displayed impressive swimming skills, with several of the six and seven-year-olds completing a full lap of the 25m pool.

The smiles and laughter reflected the excitement and enjoyment shared by all.

Sportsmanship was a key theme throughout the day and students rose to the occasion.

It was heartening to see so many supporting and cheering for their peers.

A special award was presented to Mia Vesty, who received a Certificate of Sportsmanship for being an exemplary role model to her classmates.

The presence of a large crowd of supportive parents and grandparents added to the day’s atmosphere.

To wrap up the carnival, the fastest four students were selected to form a student relay team against the parents.

This year, the parents were the winners.

In the final tally, Moira House emerged victorious, accumulating a total of 176 points, with Gulpa House close behind on 122 points.

Age champions:

Junior girls: champion Zaria Wilson-Baker; runner-up Chloe Stillitano.

Junior boys: champion Kohen McIntosh; runner-up Chase Sarota.

11 years boys: champion Tristan Hadjialexiou; runner-up Kade Harris.

Students Kip McIntosh, Kohen McIntosh, Harry Schulz, Zayne Sarota, Chase Sarota and Zaria Wilson-Baker qualified to compete in the Deniliquin Zone PSSA Swimming Carnival at Hay on February 27.

At the carnival, students achieved excellent results, with many placing fourth, fifth and sixth.

Special recognition goes to Zaria Wilson-Baker, who placed third in breaststroke and second in backstroke, qualifying her for the Riverina Swimming Carnival.
