The program helps local residents, including dialysis patients, access essential medical appointments outside the local area, including Shepparton, Yarrawonga and Kyabram.
In November last year, NCN Health was awarded $255,000 to support planning for a new day-stay dialysis and same-day cancer care unit at NCN Health Cobram.
While this planning work is under way, the health service also received a one-off grant to provide two patient transport vehicles, helping local patients travel safely and comfortably to existing dialysis services.
The Community Transport Program will be volunteer-driven and is designed to compliment existing transport services, filling identified gaps where support is needed.
NCN Health volunteer co-ordinator Jacquie Hughes said volunteers would play a crucial role in the program.
“We have heard from our community that attending dialysis appointments several times a week can be challenging and costly,” she said.
“Volunteers will make a real difference in people’s lives, and it’s a fantastic way to support your local community.”
Ms Hughes said the program was still in its early stages, and additional volunteer drivers would help it grow.
“Initially, we may be able to assist patients and their carers with some trips from home to the dialysis unit, with the aim of expanding the service as the program grows,” she said.
The volunteer driving opportunities are from Monday to Saturday and include morning and afternoon shifts.
There are also flexible commitment options for volunteers with the choice of weekly, fortnightly, or monthly shifts.
Volunteers will not only help patients access treatment, but also help build stronger community connections and support local people to stay healthy and engaged.
Community members who need assistance accessing dialysis or other medical care, or who know someone who would benefit from the service, are encouraged to contact NCN Health.
