Most of the state is on alert for flooding as a tropical low that hammered the far north continues a slow crawl through the southeast.
Brisbane is also on flood alert, with a severe weather warning in place for heavy rainfall in the Capricornia, Central Highlands, Wide Bay, Darling Downs and southeast coast districts.
More than 30 roads have been closed on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane.
The emergency warnings issued by Queensland's Central Highlands Regional Council are for Sapphire at Retreat Creek due to major flooding and Rubyvale at Policemans Creek due to flash flooding.
"There is an immediate threat to life and property. Leave as soon as you can," the warnings say.
"Go and stay in a safe place in a high area away from creeks and rivers."
In the Northern Territory, residents in Katherine are assessing the damage after their river topped major flood levels and inundated homes.
Several remote NT communities have been evacuated ahead of their townships being swamped after heavy rains in the big rivers region.
The Katherine River is receding after exceeding major flood peaks on Saturday.
Hundreds of residents from the inundated remote communities of Daly River, Palumpa, Beswick and Jilkminggan were evacuated over the weekend, most in a major airlift by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.
The Daly River will continue to rise and stay at major flood level over the coming week, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.
Daly River evacuees are staying at a pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds and Palumpa evacuees are at the city's Marrara Stadium.
It is the second time Daly River residents have been evacuated to Darwin after flooding forced their evacuation in early February.
The flooding is worse this time, with damage to homes and community services expected to be more severe.
About 1000 people are in evacuation centres in Darwin, Katherine and Mataranka.
The NT Health Department has issued a warning to Katherine residents to boil water due to the risk of contamination.
Power was being restored to many properties on Monday after they were disconnected for safety reasons.
Mayor Joanna Holden told AAP the town had more rain overnight but the river level was dropping and clean-up work was starting.
Damage assessments by the NT government and the town council were under way and emergency authorities were organising food drops to isolated properties, she said.
People might be feeling disheartened as the clean-up begins, the mayor said.
"It's not an easy task especially if you've lost anything of great value in terms of memories, it can be quite a devastating experience for people," Ms Holden said.
"We need to look out for each other, check in on our neighbours, check in on our mates."
Lukas Fischer, manager at Katherine's Contour Hotel, told AAP the past couple of days had been hectic and stressful but hotel guests had kindly shared rooms to enable people in need to be accommodated.
Katherine residents who evacuated homes before they flooded wanted to see the extent of the damage, he said.
"We have families who are obviously very scared of what's next ... after losing a lot of things due to the flooding."
A priority for authorities in Katherine is to get the hospital and schools reopened after they were closed ahead of the flood.
The federal and territory governments have announced disaster support payments for residents whose houses had flooded.
They ranged from immediate relief payments, capped at $1537 per family, to funds to help replace essential household items such as white goods and furniture.
