Barooga Sports Bowls Club
There has to be a division five winner, but unfortunately, it wasn’t Barooga. Division five played in its preliminary final on Saturday at Numurkah against Jerilderie and lost by 11 shots.

A great experience for the players, but it would appear that nerves got to them early and allowed Jerilderie to get ahead. They came back towards the end, but they were unable to bridge the gap.
Thanks to all the supporters who went to watch and support the division five side. Well done to all in making it to the preliminary final, and maybe next year will be the year.
On Sunday, Barooga had Chris and Karen playing in the champion of champions finals at Strathmerton. The weather was not the kindest to all the players and spectators, but nevertheless the bowlers played on and got through the afternoon. Both Karen and Chris won their first round matches and played their second round matches in the afternoon. Chris played against Col Power from Katandra West and gave him a big start before his game came together. Chris came back at him hard and gave himself a big chance but went down 25/18.
Karen played Jenny O’Connor from Numurkah and these two played a very tight game throughout, with scores level many times and Karen in front for much of the game. She was leading 24/22 when Jenny got a three to win the game. Well done to Karen in putting up a great fight and doing Barooga proud, but again, there can only be one winner.
Next week now we will have the grand final of both division one sides. Midweek pennant plays Cobram at Numurkah Golf, hopefully on Tuesday, but with the projected rain forecasted it could be in doubt. Saturday pennant play Numurkah Golf at Cobram with play starting at 10:30am. This game will be a televised game and if you can’t make it down to the game you can watch on YouTube by searching for Bowls Victoria. Nibbles and drinks after both games will be at the club, so come on down to celebrate our wins.
A reminder to everyone that Keith’s Friday will recommence after the finals, so Friday, March 13 will be the start date. This is an easy date to remember, so please make an effort to support the social bowls that are played each and every Friday. A change in format is on the cards so we hope to see everyone come along. A sheet will be put on the notice board to record numbers playing.
Congratulations to Chris Philpot in being named a state selector. We wish him all the best in his new role.
Cobram Bowls Club
It was the penultimate fixture for the Murray Bowls Weekend Pennant on Saturday, February 28, and all roads led to Numurkah Bowls Club, as they hosted the preliminary finals of all five Divisions.
Cobram were up against Numurkah Golf in the Division one encounter. Cobram’s Steve Tatnall and his side were drawn against a Geoff Sutcliffe skipped foursome. After an even start, Tatnall found it difficult to score in the middle period of the game. With the score 5 -13 after 13 ends, Cobram gained some traction, but only to keep pace with Sutcliffe for the remainder of the game. Tatnall 12 shots to Sutcliffe 19.
Ray Parks and his Cobram combo also waned in the middle passage of the game against Numurkah Golf side skipped by Daniel Nichols. After 14 ends, Parks was down 7 shots to 13. Parks found some spirit in the final third of the game to narrow the margin. Parks 14 shots to Nichols 17.
The game between Cobram’s Greg Dunn and Golf’s Mark Jones was an even contest from go to woe, with Dunn taking the honours on the rink, 21 shots to 20. Unfortunately for the Cobram Tigers, the overall score was lacking. Cobram 47 shots to Numurkah Golf 56 shots. Numurkah Golf, playing in their third consecutive Grand Final, will meet Barooga Sports.
This, and all division Grand Finals, will be played at Cobram Bowling Club on Saturday, March 7. In a first for Murray Bowls, the Division one Grand Final will be streamed live on the Bowls Victoria Facebook and YouTube sites.
In Division two, Cobram did battle with Wunghnu. Cobram’s Peter Garland skipped a rink with “Cliffy” Faulkner leading, Brian Doyle as second and Mick Stephens playing third. Garland and his crew held sway all day against Ian Henderson and team. Garland 22 shots to 10 was the final score. Despite being down 1–12 after five ends, Ron Dougherty’s Cobram rink were dogged against Wunghnu veteran Peter Revell.
Aided by Andrew Giblin (lead), Russell Sullivan (second) and Mark Baldwin (third), Dougherty finished in front after 21 ends. Dougherty 21 shots to Revell 18. Cobram’s Haydn Smith (skip) with Heath Smith (third), Bec Dungan (second) and Joy Mynard (lead) were too strong for the Magpie outfit skipped by Damian Hommes. Smith 26 shots to Hommes 14. Overall, Cobram 69 shots to Wunghnu 42 shots. Cobram will meet Numurkah in the Grand Final, with Numurkah seeking promotion to division one.
The division three clash between Cobram and Picola had some twists and turns. Cobram’s Phill O’Dwyer and Picola’s Bruce Agnew slugged it out for 14 ends, with the score 10 - 9 in favour of O’Dwyer. O’Dwyer and his side then put their foot down and accelerated through the final 7 ends, winning 21 shots to 10.
The same couldn’t be said for the Cobram rink skipped by Marj McDonald against Picola’s Sue Jamieson. Jamieson didn’t allow McDonald’s team to get out of second gear. Marj McDonald 10 shots to Jamieson 24. The match-up of Cobram’s Colin McDonald against Picola’s Keith Berger was tight throughout. Despite ‘C-Mac’ taking the rink honours over Berger, Cobram hadn’t done enough across the three rinks. Cobram 47 shots, two in arrears of Picola, 49 shots. Picola will now face Numurkah at Cobram next week, for the ultimate prize.
In division four, Finley were too strong for Numurkah. Numurkah, who finished on top of the ladder, were dismissed from the finals in straight sets. Finley 67 shots to Numurkah 52 shots. Finley will meet Cobram for the title of division four champions, on Saturday, March 7.
The division five preliminary final was between Barooga Sports and Jerilderie. Barooga had been the dominant side throughout the home and away series, finishing top of the ladder with only two defeats to their name. Jerilderie finished in fourth and were in winning form. Sports failed in the second semi-final, but had a chance for redemption. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that wasn’t the case. Barooga Sports 33 shots to Jerilderie 44 shots. Jerilderie will now play Wunghnu to decide the division five championship.
Cobram are also well represented in the Murray Mid-week Pennant competition. The grand final of midweek was held on Tuesday, March 3 at Numurkah Golf Bowls Club. In division one, Cobram played Barooga Sports. In division three, Cobram saddled up against a dominant Wunghnu. The results of these games are not known at the time of compiling this report.
