Earlier this week, structural damage to a section of one of the concrete structures was reported to Greater Shepparton City Council by a concerned community member.
The incident follows acts of vandalism in August last year, when several areas were defaced with graffiti.
Council said the current damage had caused serious structural problems, and upon inspection, it had been forced to close some of the facility’s areas as a result.
To ensure the safety of users, the damaged areas of the skate park have been cordoned off and will remain closed until repair works are completed, while the undamaged areas remain open and accessible to the public.
Mayor Shane Sali said the damage was extremely disappointing to see.
“This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable. Because of these actions, council resources must now be diverted to address the damage,” he said.
“Greater Shepparton is fortunate to have a range of public recreational facilities. We would expect they are treated with respect so that they can be utilised and enjoyed by residents and visitors.”
Nine-year-old Meilani Johnson-Campbell from Tatura visits the Tatura Skate Park three to four times a week. It is a place that has become part of her routine and a favourite spot to spend time with family and friends.
But when she arrived on Thursday, February 26, and saw the damage, her excitement quickly turned to anger.
“When I saw the damage, it made me feel angry,” she said.
“I come here with my cousin all the time, and the part that’s damaged is my favourite part to scoot and ride.
“It’s not fair for the other kids who use the skate park, and I hope the people who did this get caught.”
While council is considering options to improve monitoring of the facility to encourage safe and appropriate use of the site, Cr Rod Schubert said it was frustrating to see a valued community asset mistreated.
“The new skate park is something the community asked for, and it is now a well‑used and valued local asset. It’s extremely disappointing that, because of a few reckless actions, sections of the facility are now closed until further notice,” he said.
An update will be provided to the community regarding the timing of remediation works once assessments have been finalised.
The incident has been reported to police, and council is calling on members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying those responsible.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Tatura Police Station, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
