Focus Engineering is currently working on the tunnel while reconstruction and redevelopment plans remain uncertain.
The tunnel will ensure pedestrians can walk safely beneath the building’s deteriorated verandah and structural elements.
Work to protect public safety at the Star Hotel is being undertaken.
At the December Federation Council meeting, councillors received a presentation from Kell Moore Lawyers and Conveyancers regarding legal options and the steps involved for compliance action for the hotel.
The minimum requirements are to do all things deemed reasonable to ensure public safety as the hotel’s owner continues to ignore two emergency orders.
Two emergency orders, in March and December 2024 were issued identifying safety risks, specifically concerning the structural integrity of the building’s balcony.
Legal proceedings were initiated in the Land and Environment Court in June, which will determine whether to order should be enforced.
