A “challenging” tournament culminated in a tight result in the grand final, as Maxam Printing and Snelling Engineering brought the heat on a hot December Thursday.
In teams of five, each individual took on one another for three games – squash games are won by players reaching a score of 11 and by at least two points over their opponent.
Immediately, it was Maxam Printing that set the tone.
Tom Spark defeated Snelling Engineering’s Robbie McPhee three games to nil, as did Jo Marsters in her three to love win over Taylor McPhee.
Ahead by two sets already, Maxam Printing asserted itself towards a whitewash with yet another three to zero tally, assuring itself as champion of the summer tournament.
Either Maxam Printing took its foot off the gas with the result guaranteed, or Snelling Engineeing finally found its groove too little too late, but despite the three sets lead to start, the end result painted a more favourable picture for Snelling Engineering.
Tony Baressi defeated Maxam Printing’s Andrew Monichino 0-3, and Trevor Watt snuck over the line against Narelle Heaney to win the final set 1-2, seeing the final set's scorecard read 3-2 in Maxam Printing’s favour.
Heaney congratulated all those that participated in the tournament, as the club advocates for more entries in future tournaments.
“Team members enjoyed the summer comp, it was a challenging event but lots of fun with lots of team morale and support,” Heaney said.
“We’re always looking for new members and students can come down and have a hit for free.”
Located at 83 Archer St, Shepparton, the GV Squash and Racquetball Club encourages those who want to give the game a go to come down and try, as a racquetball competition kicks off on Friday, January 23, finishing on Sunday, January 25.
Registrations close on Tuesday, January 20.
