The project addresses strong community demand for more off-leash areas within the municipality.
The Benalla Saleyards Dog Park will provide a safe and accessible environment, featuring a fully fenced enclosure with large, airlock-style entries suitable for all abilities.
It will include a separate section for nervous or small dogs, a key feature requested by residents during community consultation.
The new park is designed to cater to Benalla’s growing community and its increasing number of pet owners.
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn said the new park was a fantastic outcome for community members and their four-legged friends.
“We heard loud and clear that our community wanted more space for their dogs to run and play safely,” Cr Hearn said.
“This park isn’t just for the dogs, it’s a place for people to connect and build stronger community ties.
“It’s about giving locals, especially our older residents, a great spot to get outside and enjoy time with their pets.”
Design elements will focus on sensory enrichment for dogs, with raised landscaped sections containing sand, dog-friendly plants, and rockeries to reduce stress.
Compacted, crushed rock-paths will provide a level surface for visitors, while benches will offer a place to rest.
The park will also benefit travellers along the Hume Hwy, offering a safe place to stop and exercise their dogs.
This project is supported by the Victorian Government through the New and Upgraded Dog Parks Program.
