The GV Suns were back in action in the summer heat for another preseason friendly, this time taking it up to Australian Championship title winners South Melbourne FC.

The inner-city football club ventured out to McEwen Reserve for the hit out, and would return to suburbia with victory under its belt, defeating the Orangemen 2-1.
Mohammed Al-Gazaly helped the Suns on their way to take an initial lead at the 25-minute mark, before South Melbourne equalised at the 40th minute, leaving the game tied at the break.
The Orangemen wrestled fiercely to maintain the level scores, but a penalty at the 85th minute gave South Melbourne the opportunity to take the lead, which was promptly converted to defeat the Goulburn Valley outfit by full-time.
GV Suns coach Craig Carley reflected positively on the friendly though, stating things are coming along nicely while trialling new players and team formations.
“It’s been good (the preseason friendlies),” Carley said.
“The boys are where they should be at at this time of the year, and are playing a good brand when there’s been a focus on different things - we’ve tried a few different formations and players.”
The South Melbourne clash was the GV Suns’ fourth preseason hit out after matches against Off Season Soccer Academy, Hume City and Bendigo City.
Carley hopes another preseason fixture or two will be scheduled across the holiday period, with aims to get a game up and running on January 10 and potentially, but admittedly “unlikely”, on December 20 if an interested club comes knocking before Christmas.
