Tatura Cricket Club currently fields its inaugural girls’ team in Cricket Shepparton’s under-12 B-grade division, the only all-girls team throughout the junior ranks.
The arrival of the side was met with great enthusiasm by club supporters, and club president Rohan Forster said the girls are improving and enjoying their cricket in a predominantly boys’ competition.
With a group of girls coming through the ranks at Katamatite Cricket Club as well – which fields a senior women’s team in the Goulburn Murray Cricket’s Women’s division – the two clubs have booked St Lukes Primary School for a hit on Wednesday, December 3.
And with plenty of players already sprinkled throughout the grades in both the Cricket Shepparton and Goulburn Murray ranks, Forster believes there’s a base there for a ground-breaking new competition.
“Cricket Shepparton obviously set up a women's comp this year and they were also trying to get a girls' competition up as well,” Forster said.
“Our club was able to put a team of girls together, so once the competition didn't get up, we had to decide what we were going to do.
“We knew there had been a little bit of interest still around about girls teams.
“We had a look around and discovered that Katamatite had a group of girls in the same boat.
“We had a chat to them and decided we'd at least get one game up for Christmas between the two teams so they could have an all-girls game.”
It’s been billed as a fun contest between the two teams, and any girls interested in taking up the sport have been encouraged to attend.
Additional matches are already being planned for early 2026, building towards the ultimate goal of establishing a dedicated competition that will nurture the next generation of female cricket champions.
“There's a couple other clubs who had girls interested at the start of the year,” Forster said.
“We’re hoping those clubs next year, if we can get a competition confirmed, will be able to put a couple of teams in.”
The game will be held at St Lukes Primary School on Wednesday, December 3 from 5pm.
