The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority won't assess the state Labor government's plans to build a massive entertainment and sporting precinct on the edge of Perth's CBD, which includes a multi-use racetrack capable of hosting Supercars.
"We recognise the community's concerns but are comfortable that there are other regulatory mechanisms in place to address potential issues," EPA chair Darren Walsh said.
The $217 million project has a slew of opponents, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's factional ally, federal Perth Labor MP Patrick Gorman.
Mr Gorman recently called on the Cook government to abandon the project, saying many locals were concerned about the negative impact the precinct could have on their riverside park site and the surrounding area.
More than 950 people and organisations responded to the EPA's call for comments.
The authority said their comments were considered and any environmental and noise impacts would be local, intermittent and short, and could be adequately regulated by existing legislation.
The EPA also pointed out the proposed project was next door to existing entertainment venues, such as Optus Stadium, which hosts AFL matches and concerts.
The Save Burswood Park Alliance said the EPA's decision was outrageous.
The development would destroy Burswood Park's lakes and wildlife, and directly impact thousands of residents, spokeswoman Robin Harvey said.
The proposed multi-use precinct, which was a state Labor government election promise in March, would also include an outdoor amphitheatre for live music and the racetrack could also be used for cycling and community sport.
The site east of Perth's CBD is adjacent to the Crown resort and casino and was previously a rubbish dump and a golf course.
