A lights-out shooting display from Shepparton’s Mackenzie Clark was reminiscent of WNBA namesake Caitlin Clark, but has been left in vain as a white-hot Wodonga first quarter set the tone for a blowout victory in the Country Basketball League.

The Gators have yet to win in the CBL’s north east women’s division, while Wodonga is closing in on top spot with just one loss to its name, and it was apparent early doors that the Wolves would be feasting on Shepparton, despite the Gators’ valiant efforts.

A 29-7 opening term had Shepparton shut out of making it a competitive affair, and while the Gators held firmer in the following quarters, the precedent had been set, and the damage had been done.

Hope glimmered early thanks to two three-pointers drilled by Clark for Shepparton’s opening points, but soon after the lead ballooned out to an unreachable target.

The Wolves headed back to Wodonga with a 92-48 victory to their name.

Clark finished with 18 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc, while Elliana Gray (eight) and Holly Reid (seven) top-scored next for the Gators.

Shepparton’s chances at winning will been no greater than next Saturday as they take on fellow winless outfit Wallan, before a game against another lower-table side, Seymour, on Sunday.
