Kyabram’s venom has been ineffective to start the season, losing its opening T20 to Shepparton Youth Club United by 42 runs before its latest result.
The Cats produced the largest total seen so far this summer, albeit with the season still in its infancy, going at a run rate well over a run a ball to post a total of 160, with only two wickets lost.
Opener Ebony Sleeth top scored, retiring not out at 36, while first drop Alyse O’Connell made 33 not out off her 30 deliveries.
The first wicket fell at the 12th over when Poppy Vandermeer swung hard on her last ball before retirement, caught for 21.
The Redbacks would claim a genuine wicket soon after as Eliza Linehan knocked over Amani Issell, but it would be the last of the innings as the navy blue motored to a commanding target.
And quickly, that commanding lead would become impossible to surmount.
The scoreboard pressure seemed to be all too daunting for Kyabram, which took until the fourth over to score a run off a legal delivery.
The first over featured two no-balls, one of which garnered a single, but until the 22nd ball of the innings, Mooroopna had bowled 18 dot balls, forced a run out and neatly kept two maidens.
Eliza Linehan was toppled for a four-ball duck, before Rebecca Bowles (16 retired not out), Grace Hammond (five retired not out) and Lacy Parsons (nine) combined for a 49-run stand without loss, albeit it was heavily helped by loose Mooroopna bowling.
The extras would top score for Mooroopna, with a combination of 18 wides, five no balls and one bye tallying 24 sundries, beating the best Kyabram bat by eight runs.
While the Redbacks held six wickets intact by the time the 120th ball was bowled, Mooroopna’s confidence had received a serious boost, winning by 102 runs as Kyabram scored 4-58.
Sunday’s fixture however was washed out on a stormy late morning, with the two winning sides from round one unable to gauge one another’s credentials following their strong beginnings.
SYCU was coming off a thrashing of Kyabram while Nagambie had pipped Mooroopna by four runs, with the top two sides poised for a belter of a clash.
However, they’ll have to wait until round five before their next scheduled encounter.
SYCU will instead face the Cats in round three for its next match, as Mooroopna look to continue its own winning ways, while Nagambie will travel to Kyabram.
