It offers up to $30,000 in financial assistance for tertiary study, along with invaluable work experience and employment placement opportunities within the rice industry.
Applications are open until Monday, November 17.
Established in honour of Jan Cathcart’s remarkable 43-year career in the Australian rice industry, the scholarship reflects the group’s ongoing commitment to empowering and nurturing the next generation of female leaders in agriculture.
Now in its 12th year, this esteemed program offers a unique professional experience pathway and an exceptional opportunity for women in the Australian rice industry and related agricultural networks to advance their education, build their careers, and help shape the future of the industry.
SunRice Group chair John Bradford said the scholarship continues to play an important role in empowering the next generation of women who are passionate about shaping the future of the rice industry.
“The Jan Cathcart Memorial Scholarship represents the very best of what our industry stands for - dedication, opportunity and community,” he said.
“It’s a fitting tribute to Jan’s extraordinary legacy and a reflection of our ongoing commitment to nurturing talented women who want to make a difference.
“Over the past decade, the program has supported remarkable women who have gone on to contribute across every corner of the industry.
“Their achievements and shared connection form a legacy in themselves - one that continues to strengthen the SunRice Group and the broader rice industry year after year.
“I encourage anyone considering a career in agriculture, and particularly in the rice industry, to apply and take this opportunity to follow in Jan’s footsteps.”
Tocumwal’s Alexandra Hatty was the recipient in 2025, and reflected on the program’s impact and the legacy it represents.
As a Bachelor of Development Studies and Bachelor of Social Science student at The University of Newcastle, Miss Hatty’s aim is to use her degree to support rural communities.
When announcing the scholarship earlier this year, SunRice said it would enable Alexandra to focus on addressing the social dimensions of agriculture through improving education, communication, and knowledge-sharing within the rice industry and broader farming communities.
Miss Hatty highlighted the opportunities and confidence the scholarship has given her as she builds her career in agriculture.
"Jan’s passion for the rice industry and its people is something that really lives on through this scholarship,“ she said.
“It’s built on connection, education and the belief in the next generation, and being a part of it has given me the support and motivation to see how my studies can shape a meaningful career in agriculture.
“The support network that comes with the scholarship - from past recipients to people across SunRice - has been invaluable.
“It’s created opportunities and shown me the many possibilities within the industry. For any young woman considering a future in agriculture, I’d encourage you to apply – it’s an opportunity that can truly shape your future.”
The scholarship is open to female SunRice Group shareholders, growers, employees, and their families.
Women across the rice industry network are encouraged to apply or nominate eligible candidates who would benefit from this program.
Eligible students include those currently enrolled at a university or preparing to begin their first year of tertiary studies in 2026. The recipient will be announced in early 2026.
