Bathed in sunshine, the event drew a crowd of families, friends and community leaders— all gathered to celebrate culture, unity and the enduring legacy of Rizal.
Dr Rizal was a medical practitioner, human rights advocate, author and advocate for women’s empowerment, among the many things he devoted his life to.
Attendees arrived with homemade dishes to share, embodying the Filipino spirit of bayanihan (communal unity) and hospitality.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including Consul General Jesus ‘Garry’ S. Domingo from the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne, Deputy Mayor Anthony Brophy, Cr Fern Summer and Sir Walter Villagonzalo, area commander of the Knights of Rizal (Victoria and Tasmania).
Other dignitaries included Lady Imelda McLean, Lady Josephine Quintero — Dr Rizal’s great-grandniece — and representatives from the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District and Victoria Police.
The program featured heartfelt speeches, traditional performances and a symbolic unveiling led by Consul General Domingo alongside community leaders.
As the bust was revealed, applause and cheers filled the air, marking a moment of deep pride for Shepparton’s Filipino community.
“This has truly been a community effort,” former FAFA vice-president Mayette Martin said.
“From the first idea to the final polish, we did this together.”
The event concluded with a lively fellowship lunch, laughter and song — turning the day into both a tribute to Dr Rizal and a celebration of multicultural harmony in Shepparton.
A special highlight included the oath-taking of FAFA’s newly elected 2025-2026 committee, officiated by Consul General Domingo — cementing a legacy of service, pride and cultural connection for future generations.
Mabuhay ang FAFA. Mabuhay ang ating komunidad. Mabuhay ang alaala ni Dr. José Rizal.
(Long live FAFA. Long live our community. Long live the memory of Dr José Rizal.)
