After a glittering 10-year career at Melbourne that included the 2021 premiership, four club best-and-fairest’s, and three All-Australian blazers, Clayton Oliver’s time at the Dees is officially over.
The Mooroopna-born midfielder is heading to Greater Western Sydney, with the Giants securing his services for a future third-round draft pick after Oliver decided to explore opportunities beyond Melbourne.
The trade was confirmed last Wednesday, with the “extremely talented” 28-year-old a big boost for the Giants according to Executive General Football Manager Jason McCartney.
“It’s a fantastic result that Clayton has chosen to continue his career at the Giants,” McCartney said.
“He’s an extremely talented player who will strengthen our list and will thrive in the program, culture and environment that we have to offer.
“He is exactly the type of player who can help us take the next step in our journey toward success, and we’re excited to see his future unfold in the orange and charcoal.”
Oliver's 205-game career with the Demons culminated in him receiving Life Membership earlier this year.
Drafted with the fourth pick of the 2015 AFL Draft after starring in the Goulburn Valley League for the Cats and then the Murray Bushrangers, Oliver departs after crafting a reputation as one of the game’s premier contested midfielders.
He was courted by both GWS and Collingwood but eventually opted for a move to NSW that will tie him to the Giants until 2030, joining fellow GVL product Lachlan Ash at Engie Stadium.
Oliver still had five years running on the seven-season contract extension he inked in late 2022.
He played 22 games in 2025, averaging 25 disposals, five clearances, and 12 contested possessions as Melbourne finished 14th.
“Clayton has had an outstanding career in the red and blue, and we thank him for his contribution over the past decade,” Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb said.
“He has produced some exceptional football over the journey and played a crucial role throughout the drought-breaking 2021 season.
“Ultimately, Clayton decided he would like to explore his options during the Trade Period, and we are happy that he has been able to find a new home at the Giants.
“Clayton will forever be a Melbourne person and will always hold a special place at the club.
“We wish him nothing but the best for the future.”
Oliver has yet to make an official comment on his departure from the club, other than to remark “best day ever” under a GWS Instagram post announcing his signing for the club.
