From July 1, Victorian motorists must slow down to 40km/h when passing any incident response vehicles displaying flashing lights, regardless of colour.
The change to Road Rule 79A follows a two-year campaign and expands on existing requirements introduced in 2017, which only applied to emergency vehicles with red or blue flashing lights.
RACV general manager automotive services Makarla Cole welcomed the update.
“We’re grateful that the Victorian Government has made this change to improve the safety outcomes and working conditions of roadside and incident response workers,” she said.
“Now that we have had an important and much-needed update to 79A, it’s up to Victorians to do their part and ensure these vital workers can do their jobs without fear of harm and get home to their families safely.”
Motorists who fail to comply with the updated rule face a maximum fine of $961.
