AFL Goulburn Murray is launching an under-14 junior girls competition on Friday, June 6.
The league is aligned with the Goulburn Murray Women and Girls League and will be a fun and competitive football environment for girls aged 11-14.
This means girls in the Goulburn Murray region can lace up their boots and kick the Sherrin around with their mates earlier than before, developing their skills and knowledge on Aussie rules.
Goulburn Murray Women and Girls co-ordinator Sammy Heron said the new competition would help boost participation rates in the region.
“Having a female-only Auskick, Superkick and new junior girls competition provides a full female-only football pathway from Auskick to women’s,” Heron said.
“It will provide female athletes from the age of four to 99-plus the opportunity to play football with their peers.
“It was exciting to see our junior girls play an exhibition game ahead of a recent youth girls match.
“There are already some talented players that will be exciting to watch as they develop their game and skills.”
The new under-14 competition will run for eight weeks, with the top two sides competing in a grand final ahead of the youth girls and senior women grand finals, which will be held on August 10.
Teams will consist of 12 players on modified fields designed to assist with the development of players.
Rules will align with the AFL’s junior standards for under-14, meaning tackling is allowed.
Matches will be held in Shepparton or Echuca-Moama.
All-girl Auskick (ages four to seven) and Superkick (seven to 12) clinics will also be run starting Friday at centres in Shepparton and Echuca-Moama.
