RACV is reminding motorists of the important steps to take if they are involved in a minor car collision, to ensure their safety and assist with a potential insurance claim.
You should:
- Try to remain as calm as possible and check on the health of your passengers
- Turn on your hazard lights following the collision, and when safe to do so, move your vehicle out of traffic to prevent further incidents
- If your vehicle is too damaged to move and you are blocking the road, ensure your hazard lights are on and call the police for assistance
- Exchange details with all involved parties: collect names, contact numbers, address, vehicle registration details, insurance information
- If you can, collect driver’s licence number, car make, model and colour, details of any witnesses present, photos of the accident scene, vehicle damage and road conditions
- Contact police if other driver/s refuses to share their details or leaves the scene
- Notify insurance as soon as possible
“The more information you can provide, the smoother the claims process will be,” RACV general manager motoring products Jeff Ames said.
“Even if you’re unsure about making a claim, it’s best to report the accident straight away.
“Knowing what steps to take will help you stay in control and protect yourself and others on the road."
