The historic Waranga Rail Trail will be officially opened at 10am on Saturday, May 17 in Rushworth, following the completion of the Campaspe Shire section in late March.
The 19km trail, which follows a decommissioned railway line from Rushworth to Murchison, represents a collaborative effort between Campaspe Shire and Greater Shepparton councils, with significant input from local landowners and stakeholders.
The project received funding through the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant Program.
It connects with the eastern section that was developed by Greater Shepparton City Council in 2015.
“The rail trail is a fantastic addition to our shire which benefits community members, visitors and local businesses alike,” Campaspe Shire Mayor Daniel Mackrell said.
The official opening will coincide with the regular monthly Rushworth market, and the public is encouraged to attend with their families, walking shoes, or bikes to explore the region's natural beauty and historic features.
