For those planning to enjoy the big game with friends, AV has reminded the community to drink responsibly and stay hydrated. Whether you’re watching at the ground or from a local pub, having a designated driver or using public transport to get home safely is essential.
Paramedics will be on hand at the AFL grand final to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
“The big game is a great reason to bring family and friends together, and if you’re enjoying a drink, please do so responsibly and stay hydrated,” AV director emergency management Justin Dunlop said.
“If you’re drinking at the game or away from home, make plans to arrange a designated driver or use public transport — and look out for your mates.
“Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat, even in overcast conditions.”
And if you’re feeling unwell, Mr Dunlop advised you to enjoy the game from home.
“If you plan on heading to a public event but are coughing and sneezing — it’s best you stay home so you don’t spread it to others,” he said.
“No-one wants to go to the match and then have to go home or receive emergency treatment because their condition worsens.
“Take advantage of Victoria’s alternative care pathways, which can provide timely care for less-urgent matters.”

The long weekend is also an opportunity to hit the road, and many Victorians will take the opportunity to get away.
“If you’re heading to rural or bushland areas to hike or camp, bring enough water and food, as well as anything else you need to stay safe such as matches, a torch and sunscreen,” Mr Dunlop said.
“Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, so consider learning first aid and CPR.
“Importantly, tell someone where you’re going and when you plan on returning.”
Finally, downloading the EmergencyPlus app will assist in emergencies, providing location details to 000 in areas without a data connection.
