During Refugee Week, Shepparton Library hosted an art exhibition showcasing the talents of local artist siblings Sakeena and Mohammad Ali Akbari.
Both predominantly self-taught, Sakeena has been honing her craft for the past four years, while her brother Mohammad Ali has seven years of artistic experience.
The exhibition highlighted their work’s diverse and captivating range, from portraits to landscapes.
This wasn’t the first time the pair’s art has been on show however.
Their artwork was proudly featured in the City of Greater Shepparton multicultural calendar in 2022. Sakeena has also had the honour of exhibiting some of her pieces at the prestigious Shepparton Art Museum (SAM).
The Akbari family arrived in Australia from Afghanistan four years ago and have warmly embraced their new home.
“I like Shepparton; it’s a lovely place,” Mohammad Ali said.
“I’ve liked art since childhood,” he said, reflecting on his artistic journey.
“I took art classes for four years and kept drawing and drawing in my free time.”
When asked for advice for aspiring artists, Mohammad Ali offered a heartfelt message.
“Fall in love with the process, and the results will come.”
