What began as a bit of fun in support of local community groups more than ten years ago has been reinvigorated this year to celebrate the end of the winemaker’s vintage season and raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease research.
“We felt that we could improve the event by including a nationally recognised cause this year,” Rutherglen Rotary Club member Paul Hauff said.
“We love supporting our local organisations, such as (this year’s recipient) the CFA, but we also understood that many locals also have a connection to MND and by including a national recipient of our fundraising efforts we have been able to attract a much larger number of participants to both the ride and the lunch.”
Originally planned to be held at Pfeiffer wines, logistical issues made the venue untenable but, thankfully, Cofield Wines stepped in to save the day.
“We’re very grateful to Cofield Wines for offering to accommodate our needs for the event at the last minute,” Mr Hauff said.
“We already have in excess of 160 guests registered to attend lunch there with us on Saturday and we’re looking forward to celebrating both the wine vintage season and the array of old bicycles and clothing with them all.”
Ride participants will depart the Rutherglen Convent from 10am on Saturday morning and will meander along the rail trail and other gentle, mostly sealed, quiet roads fully supported by a field vehicle, route map, energy bar and fresh water.
“The cost to participate in the ride also includes a barbecue lunch at Cofield’s at the ride’s conclusion,” Mr Hauff said.
“The weather forecast is looking fantastic so it will be a great afternoon to enjoy some live music, raffles, prizes for best vintage dress and other surprises in aide of two great causes.”
