After 83 games in the AFL for the Blues and North Melbourne, Teague began a 12-year coaching apprenticeship that has led him to the top of the tree.
Following three years with the Northern Bullants in the VFL, Teague filled assistant coaching roles at West Coast, St Kilda, Adelaide and Carlton, honing his craft to the point that the Blues had little choice but to offer him the full time senior gig after impressing immensely in his time as caretaker.
In a press conference at Ikon Park, Teague - with wife Hannah and children Jack, Lucy and Milla in attendance - spoke of the emotions he felt when breaking the good news to his family.
"Telling my wife was... really good," Teague said.
"It's probably hard because I know they've been through a lot, they've moved. Originally when Adelaide asked me, I said no and my wife was the one that said 'why wouldn't you go and work under Phil (late Adelaide coach Phil Walsh)? He's been as big an influence on you as anyone', and she was willing to pick up the kids and move over there.
"You travel every second weekend as an interstate coach and it makes it quite hard on your family. When she said she was proud, that's what choked me (up) out of anything.
"Then I told my Mum and that was really nice, then I told my Dad, but you guys in here wrecked it because he goes 'yeah I just heard it on the radio...that's old news'."
Teague cited his anticipation for what his troops could accomplish in the near future as a defining factor of his excitement.
"While I am proud to be given this great opportunity to coach our football club, my overwhelming feeling is excitement for what we can achieve together," Teague said.
"The support that not only myself, but our entire playing and coaching group have felt, is a real sign that the entire Carlton family believes in the direction we are heading.
"I will be giving everything I have to see our club achieve success and I have no doubt our players will give their heart and soul as well. Off the back of the incredible support received so far from our fans, I'm confident that our unity as a football club is one that is capable of delivering our members premierships."
And as for his beloved home town, Teague was greatly appreciative for the continued support he receives.
"To all of Katandra as well," he said while thanking those closest to him.
"It's a big family, it's a big community town and they get behind me as well, so I'd like to mention them and thank them as well."
