Goulburn Valley Suns entertain Melbourne Knights in Craig Prothero fundraiser friendly
The Goulburn Valley Suns took on a worthy cause against high-profile opposition in a pre-season friendly Saturday at McEwen Reserve.
Longtime Suns contributor Craig Prothero was the focus as all proceeds from the gates went directly to support the family in his fight against an aggressive cancer.
The Prothero clan is a beloved family within the Suns organisation, with Craig’s son, goalkeeper Charlie, in the under-18 squad after coming through the youth ranks.
Though the result was hardly the most important order of business on the day, the Suns managed to kick off their 2024 pre-season in fine style on the pitch, taking a 2-2 draw from the National Premier League 1 heavyweights Melbourne Knights.
The Suns hope to retain another pre-season fixture on Saturday, January 20, but are short an opponent after Corio SC pulled out of the game.
Megan Fisher was on hand to capture the action from McEwen as crowds flocked to the ground for a club favourite.
