Welsh import Connor Davies - in his Cricket Shepparton debut for Tatura - and teenager Raj Singh attempted to field the same ball at Nagambie Recreation Reserve and crashed into each other.
Both players had to be taken to hospital, with Davies eventually found to have fractured a rib and Singh escaping with a few bumps and bruises.
The collision happened just short of the close of Nagambie's innings, and taking into account a long delay and the fact Tatura was reduced to just nine players, umpire Gary Wood made the decision to call off the contest.
“The ball was hit between Connor and Raj and they ran into each other, it looked like Raj hit Connor's ribs with his head,” Tatura captain Michael Archer said.
“By the time they were taken off in the ambulance, it was about an hour-and-a-half delay, so Gary decided to call the game off, no-one was really keen to get going again after watching that I don't think.
“It was very scary at the start, but once we knew there was nothing too serious in terms of injuries, it was okay.”
The Lakers won the toss and decided to take first use of what Archer described as a "good deck and quick outfield", making their way to 1-110 without too much trouble before the visitors began to make some real inroads.
Nagambie lost 5-30 at one stage before righting the ship once more to reach 6-187 after 42 overs before play was abandoned.
Opener Matt Martin was in fine form with 60, while returning star Luke Nolan (42), Zac Winter-Irving (32 not out) and Brayden Biggs (20 not out) also batted well.
Archer claimed 3-43 with the ball to lead Tatura's attack, with Blake Armstrong, Bailey Archer and Louis Worm also making breakthroughs.
“Anything that went through the infield was four, so I thought we bowled pretty disciplined and pretty tight and then put on the squeeze a bit more when the wickets started to fall,” Archer said.
“Bailey is one of the young blokes that we'll look towards to play a bigger role this year and I thought he bowled really well.”
THE GAME
Nagambie 6-187 (Matt Martin 60, Luke Nolan 42, Michael Archer 3-43) drew with Tatura.
STAR PLAYER
Matt Martin (Nagambie): Martin was more than solid at the top of the order for the Lakers, starting the season in great fashion with a hard-fought 60 to set a platform for his side.
