Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum made the announcement on Friday, August 14, for the intersection of Katandra Main Rd and Labuan Rd.
Mr Drum said the cash injection would enhance safety measures of the road in a bid to help reduce the likelihood of another accident.
“Unfortunately, this intersection has been the site of a fatality in the past five years and another couple of very major serious car crashes that have resulted in hospitalisation,” Mr Drum said.
“There has also been a range of near misses reported to the authorities as well.”
The upgrade will see the relocation of the southern leg of the intersection to the west, to create a staggered T-intersection.
Mr Drum said the government was working with local councils to make country roads safer.
“If you just let councils have full responsibility of keeping our roads up-to-date, then they are never going to have enough money,” Mr Drum said.
“It also enables councils to find and focus on priority projects in their area and puts Federal Government money into local problems.”
Katandra's Jayne Walters, who was seriously injured in a two-car collision at the intersection five years ago, said she welcomed the announcement.
Ms Walters suffered a fractured spine, broken ribs and hip, a dislocated knee, vision loss and two bleeds on her brain.
“‘I have four holes in my forehead that remind me every day of what I have gone through,’’ Ms Walters said.
“Still to this day I have seen dozens of people go straight through that road.
“I would hate to think that anyone else’s family has to suffer like my family has.
“But an accident also affects the entire community — so if that doesn’t have to happen again that would be fantastic,” she said.
Greater Shepparton City Council said work on the intersection was expected to begin in March/April next year.
