Shepparton Harness Racing Club racing and operations manager Ian McDonald was over the moon with the field for the time-honoured event that is the headline act for this weekend’s eight-race card.
Recent Inter Dominion winner I Cast No Shadow is one of the main drawcards in the field of 11, while stablemate Majestic Cruiser and recent Bendigo Cup placegetters Sicario and Max Delight are hunting glory in the Group Two race.
“The quality of the field is unbelievable. We’re absolutely thrilled with the cup field,” McDonald said.
“Between them the total prizemoney won is $4.2 million which is extraordinary for an 11-horse field. We have the reigning Inter Dom winner up, a very talented Kiwi import in Cranbourne, Max Delight, Sicario ... the list goes on and it should be a very interesting race.”
Saturday’s temperature is predicted to reach 40ºC and that has forced the race meeting to be pushed back to a 6.30pm start.
McDonald said the later start time “should help” to appeal to racegoers and spectators with the mercury tipped to reach its peak in the late afternoon.
“It’s going to be quite hot, but hopefully by the feature race it’s warm and pleasant for everybody,” he said.
“We’ve got plenty of entertainment on the night as well, with live music, cash giveaways, food trucks and kids activities.”
Entry on Saturday night is free and open to all ages.
