Life membership for Barry Webb

By Yarrawonga Chronicle

The North Eastern District Golf Association has awarded Life Membership to local Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort member, Barry Webb.

Delegates at last Wednesday night’s AGM voted unanimously to induct Barry, along with another long-time Executive member, Peter “Smokey” Dawson.

Barry joined the Yarrawonga Club in 1983 and has spent nearly 30 of those years dedicating his services to district golf.

He joined the District Executive in 1991 and acted as Vice-President in 1992/3 then President for three years from 1994.

He also filled the role of District Delegate to Golf Victoria from 1994 till 2010, when regional conferences ceased.

However, Barry filled many other roles in his time on the Executive until he retired at the end of the amalgamation process, combining the Ladies and Men’s associations into one, which was completed at the end of 2017.

These included the tasks of Pennant Co-ordinator, Course rating Co-ordinator and Amalgamation Committee member.

The role of course rating involved many hours of visiting clubs and gathering information, then processing, reviewing and reporting the data collected to Golf Vic which has resulted in the course ratings we now have for every course and handicaps are based on.

This took up four years of his time.

The process of amalgamation took another two years and Barry’s great knowledge of procedures, constitutions and governance meant he played an integral role in this process.

With the writing of a new constitution, attention to detail was required and Barry certainly had this.

So, after 27 years on the District Executive, Barry resigned at the end of 2017 but still fills a role and a helping hand in producing the Pennant draws each year.

After collating the various teams into their appropriate divisions and sections, Barry then goes about compiling a draw and allocating courses for the pennant season, not without many drafts as clubs waver over their needs and requests.

Also inducted was Smokey Dawson who had 18 years on Committee, filling the role of President for four years, Vice President for 10 years and making major contributions to Country Week administration, Junior development in the District as well as filling a role on the Amalgamation Committee.

Barry and Smokey will be presented with their badges at the District opening day at Jubilee Golf Club on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
