Wetlands inquiry open

A public inquiry into the protection of wetlands under the Ramsar Convention will be open for public submissions until Friday, November 29.

The Victorian Parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee inquiry comes after the auditor-general released a report into the condition of the state's wetlands.

The 2016 report determined a need for action to maintain Victorian wetlands under its Ramsar Convention obligations.

Committee chair Lizzie Blandthorn said the inquiry would examine the actions of government agencies since the release of the auditor-general's recommendations.

“We will be seeking information from the relevant agencies such as Parks Victoria on the steps they have taken to address the issues identified,” Ms Blandthorn said.

She said it was the committee's role to hold government agencies accountable to the parliament.

Public hearings will commence in December.
