Regional towns unlikely to head to lockdown

By Andrew Johnston

REGIONAL Victorians are likely to avoid further restrictions for the time being.

At the time of writing there were 172 active cases of coronavirus across regional Victoria, with Colac Otway Shire the hardest hit.

Campaspe currently has only seen five cases, with none currently active, while Greater Shepparton officially has no active cases as of Monday.

There are 10 cases in the City of Greater Bendigo.

But the Andrews Government and chief health officer Brett Sutton remain firm that a lockdown for regional centres remains unnecessary.

“We're certainly watching the regional cases in Victoria very closely,” Prof Sutton said.

“We can see the links back to Melbourne; a lot of that is because people have to work, and move into regional Victoria.

“But we're not seeing a kind of growth in community transmission in any of those places, really.”

Premier Daniel Andrews was asked again on Sunday if the government was considering added restrictions.

“Any changes that are made would only be made on advice; I have no such advice,” he said.
