The heavier conditions didn’t bother Cory Berghofer, however, as he easily won A-grade and the day with a great round of 79-12-67, four shots ahead of his closest rival.
From a pennant point of view his excellent round was perhaps ill-timed, however, the damage to his handicap was fortunately less than might have been anticipated.
Tommy Ladhams, a newcomer to the club, acquitted himself well and was the B-grade winner with a score of 99-27-72.
He also won the chook shed challenge with 11 points, so will have some handy cash to pick up on his next visit.
Ball competition winners were Greg Hall with 71, Simon Doherty 72 and John Fuller and Craig Doherty with 74.
Nearest the pins were won by Simon Doherty on the sixth, Ash Sanders on the ninth and Bruce Brown with a great shot on the jackpot 12th, a shot he played without the benefit of GPS distance.
Barry Webber was in some of his best form for last Thursday’s twilight competition.
He was the easiest of winners with a round of 50-13-37, more than four shots better than the runner-up.
When Barry responds to the question of “how did you go Bazz?” with “I played all right”, you may as well give up any hope you had of winning because you know he has had a very good round.
Simon Doherty was the runner-up with 45-3.5-41.5.
He also won least putts with 16 on a countback from Craig Doherty.
No nearest the pins were won, so there will be a double jackpot on the ninth this week.
The two point cut was 42.5.
Pennant this week was at Valley View where Merrigum took on the home side in much more pleasant conditions than last week.
This was a must win for Merrigum to have any hope of a finals berth and the first two pairs got the day off to a good start.
Ash Sanders and Bruce Brown had a solid win 4-3, while Cory Berghofer and Jeff Parry won their match 3-1.
Unfortunately that was it for the day, with Simon Doherty and Barry Webber going down 3-2, Gary Eden and Phil Barca 5-3 and Mal and James Campbell by two holes.
Pennant has a week off this week and resumes on February 14 at Merrigum.
Saturday’s event is stableford.
