Tatura lost by six shots, 76 to 82, and the pennant season bowls came to an abrupt end.
Dot Best (s), had in her side brother-in-law John Attwood, Col `Jockey’ Johnson and her sister Faye Attwood, and they dominated their match against Gail Bailey, conceding only seven ends for the day and winning comfortably, 41 to 15. Joyce Andrus on the 13th end was trailing Lynn Hawkless by just two shots, 11 to 13, but then proceeded to drop 15 shots in the next three ends to be down by 17. The remainder of the game was evenly matched with Andrus losing 21 to 38. Leading early, five to nil, Freda Clement (s), Peter Wallis, Frances Britten and Terry Gale allowed Rita Ivak to win the next nine ends to be down by 12 shots, 5 to 17. In a match where Clement's rink only won seven ends for the day, they were well beaten by 15 shots, 14 to 29.
In the final round of home and away pennant, Tatura's Weekend Division 6 side played Shepparton Golf at Tatura and with a two-rink win was up overall by 19 shots, 77 to 58.
Ladder leader Shepparton Golf has only lost two games for the year and both were inflicted by the Tatura team. The club will now feature in finals and will play against Mooroopna next week in an elimination final, and on current form should give a good account of itself in the race for the premiership.
Joyce Andrus in midweek pennant earlier in the week against Shepparton Golf was soundly beaten, but with her team of Col Johnson, Michael Stone and Graham Andrus reversed the result in weekend pennant to defeat Ken Cooper by 12 shots, 26 to 14.
Seth Tziros has taken up the challenge of the skipper role late this pennant season and remains undefeated in all his skipped matches. Last Saturday Tziros with Paul Hussey, Freda Clement and Paul Nowland were leading 7 to 2 on the 6th end, fell away to be down 7 to 13 on the 14th end and fought back to be level 15 each on the 21st end. They then won the last four ends to outscore Bruce Giovanetti by 10 shots, 25 to 15.
Tatura's Roderick Kirby has been in winning form of late and in his game against John Clurey it appeared as if Kirby (s), Dave Westin, George Tully and Faye Attwood would come away with a win when four shots up on the last end. However, after dropping a seven, the lead turned into a three-shot deficit, 26 to 29.
The game had many ups and downs for Clurey: on the seventh end he had a solid lead, 16 to 2, but was overtaken by Kirby by the 18th end, 21 to 20.
Tatura's Weekend Division 2, already assured of finals action because of their place in the final four, was playing Shepparton Park, also sitting in the four and in no danger of being evicted.
The result for the day left much to be desired for Tatura, which was soundly thrashed by 43 shots, 111 to 68, by Shepparton Park in the last home and away game and now will meet the same side in the sudden-death elimination next week.
There was no joy for Tatura, with no rinks managing to have a win. Brendon Boyd had a tight game against Ash Williamson and looked to be in contention for a win with two ends to play. Boyd (s), Peter Wallis, Bob Bordett and Rod Kirby were holding shots on the last two ends but Williamson and his team converted on both occasions, eventually getting up by four shots over Boyd, 29 to 23.
Nick Boyd (s), Terry Gale, Brendan Sharp and Mark Spencer battled all day with Vince Page but were never really in contention. Shepparton Park's Page won by 10 shots, 25 to 15.
John Attwood had a close match to a point; on the 20th end he was only trailing Diane Hands by four shots, 14 to 18 — but in the next four ends Attwood's rink dropped 12 shots to eventually lose by 13 shots, 16 to 29.
Jason Carter (s), Phil Boyd, John Crilly and Darryn Carpenter played against Dennis Beck (s) and his angels Marg Thorne, Cathy Dudley and Sue Tyson, with Beck's rink dominating all day to win comfortably by 14 shots, 28 to 14.
