On Saturday we travelled south to Avenel and lost overall by five shots.
We came very close to winning three rinks but lack of training told against us in the end.
Our newly renovated green is just becoming available for practice and looks very good.
Our only winning rink was skipped by Joe Chant who had Wayne Shepherd, John Gilbert and Peter Hoare; they played Archie Patterson’s rink and won by four shots.
They led all day but could never actually take control of the game, in fact with one end to play they only led by a single shot; still a win is a win. Well done.
Glen Denham had David Pettifer, Graeme Hubble and Barry McMeeken and drew with B McDonald.
This game was very tight and at the completion of the tenth end only a single shot separated the two teams.
But by the finish of the 19th end Merrigum had a 10-shot lead and it looked as if they were in for a big win.
However the Avenel boys had other ideas and gradually reduced the deficit to four shots with one end to play.
Much to the Merrigum skip's dismay they dropped four shots on this final end and had to settle for a draw.
Rob Dennis played David Furletti and it was a close struggle all day.
In spite of losing three lots of five shots they were all square on the penultimate end.
Merrigum held the shot for the larger part of that end but Avenel was able to draw the shot to gain a narrow win.
In the last game Gary Mott played Noel Slater and lost by eight shots.
This may seem like an easy win to Avenel but at the beginning of the “championship” ends Merrigum trailed by 17 shots and it looked as if they were in for a real hiding.
But to their credit they outscored their opposition by nine shots to nil and added some respectability to the score.
If only they could have begun this comeback earlier, the final result may have been very different.
On Tuesday our pennant team is going to Mooroopna Golf and are hoping for a win in spite of having lots of players unavailable.
Our meals begin again this Thursday at 6 pm and members are asked to bring a salad.
On Tuesday, January 21, we are hosting a barefoot bowls evening for the Lions and the staff of Hichliffe and Greed.
We need some helpers to cook the barbecue and assist with organising the games.
Please let Joe know if you are available.
You would need to be at the clubrooms by 6 pm.
On Sunday we had lunch with Graeme Hubble and members, family and friends had a very enjoyable meal and enjoyed the social chit chat and frivolity.
This is our second visit to Graeme’s for lunch and a garden walk.
The club really appreciates this gesture as it also acts as a fundraiser. Hope to see you all there again next year.
