The 57-year-old non-playing coach of the Roos advised The Free Press of his desire to have a break from the top job.
“I just don’t want to coach anymore,” he told The Free Press. “I don’t think I can take the club any further and believe it’s in the club’s interests I step down.
“I certainly want to see the club become successful. Rather than hold off and leave everybody in limbo I thought it was best I let them know now.”
Starting as a 19-year-old with the AFL Kangaroos, dynamic midfielder German booted 201 goals in his 185 games with North Melbourne from 1984 to 1994. Appointed Corowa Rutherglen coach in 2021, he has improved the club’s on-field performance, winning five out of 13 games (Covid-affected) last season and notching up six this season with two rounds remaining.
The renowned football coach with 30 years of coaching experience has achieved a lot of success including WAFL premierships with Subiaco in 2004 and 2006.
German came to Corowa from Melbourne for a change to country life. “I have great respect for people around here – the volunteers, I’m really great friends of supporters,” German said. “I’ll probably hang around here for a while.”
Corowa Rutherglen Football Netball Club President Stuart Lingham said the club was disappointed German would not be continuing in the role.
“We acknowledge the passion and dedication that Peter has put into the club over the two years, and we wish him all the best in his football endeavours,” the president said.
“Our football club will now focus on finding a new coach for 2023 and beyond.”
