The BASL’s new structure includes the men’s and women’s competitions being separated into a two-tier system, while the league requirement to field a minimum of three senior teams has been removed.
The changes also include a new name, with the competition now to be known as the Central Victorian League.
2022 BASL CHANGES AT A GLANCE
– Men’s competition separated into two leagues, League One with seniors and reserves and League Two set for single team entry or additional teams from League One clubs if numbers are high
– Women’s competition separated into two leagues, League One and League 2, single team entry requirement for both leagues with these competitions to allow for promotion and relegation
– Removal of current requirement for clubs to field a minimum of three senior teams
– Competitions renamed to fit the new structure, the top divisions will now be called the Central Victorian League 1 Men’s and Women’s
Shepparton United Soccer Club president Nathan Sali said he was happy with the new direction the league was taking.
“It’s great for the league, it’s fantastic,” Sali said.
“The new name in particular is something we like, with it being more inclusive for clubs outside of Bendigo and in Shepparton and other areas.”
BASL president Aaron Shooter described the changes as significant for the region.
“The outcome is significant for football in the region, the board and I truly believe the structure sets us up for both short term stability and future growth,” Shooter said.
“The immediate benefit to current clubs and their members will be improved fixtures, meaning more football more often and addresses the clear feedback from both clubs and players alike over recent years.
“Excitingly it also allows for new or existing clubs to apply for entry to the competition without the pressure to develop a three-team senior set-up in their first year, in turn allowing a path for growth.”
Shooter thanked the subcommittee members, staff and board members who helped bring this significant opportunity for soccer in the region to light.
“I look forward to much more football for all in season 2022,” he said.
These changes will impact all clubs in the league, including Moama Echuca Border Raiders, Shepparton, Shepparton United, Shepparton South and Tatura.
