Goulburn Valley Bowls Division state pairs action thrills region

By Tyler Maher

The recent Goulburn Valley Bowls Division state pairs competitions ended in thrilling circumstances.

The men's and women's finals were decided by a solitary shot when the last bowl came to rest, highlighting the supreme standard of the action.

In the women's competition, Di Hands and Kate Bush defeated Cathy Dudley and Sandra Wallace in an all-Shepparton Park battle 18-17.

The final — pushed back to yesterday at Tatura due to dreadful conditions on day one of play — tested the limits of all competitors before Hands and Bush eventually found themselves in front at the right time.

It was a 26-16 win against Jenny Crilly (Stanhope) and Mavis Marshall (Rushworth) on Sunday that steered Hands and Bush into the decider, while Dudley and Wallace had knocked over Stacey Collier (East Shepparton) and Elsie Gale (Mooroopna Golf) 19-12 in the final-four.

In the men's final, reigning champions Brad Orr and David Daws (Shepparton Golf) took on 2017-18 victors Paul Nichols (Shepparton Park) and Daniel Nichols (East Shepparton).

A decider befitting the contest ensued on the pristine Euroa green, with the Golfers taking a three-shot lead into the last end.

With Nichols holding shot, Orr struck the jack into the ditch to seemingly put the game to bed.

But the East coach delivered two pearlers to draw a pair of shots to the ditch and fall just one shot short of parity in the 16-15 result.

Orr had defeated Kyabram's Rob George and Paul McInnes 15-12 in the semi-final, with the father-son duo ousting Stanhope's Barry Fletcher and Shane Walsh 20-9 in their final-four fixture.

News photographer Megan Fisher was on hand on Sunday to capture some of the action.
