Marist cricket carnival arrives in Shepparton

By Tyler Maher

The 47th Australasian Marist Cricket Carnival has arrived in Shepparton, with action set to be staged across the Goulburn Valley throughout the week.

Hosted by Notre Dame College, the carnival has teams from Marist College Bendigo, St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill and St Gregory's College, Campbelltown on deck to take part in the tournament.

An early schedule change due to inclement weather moved the Twenty20 portion of the competition forward to kick-off proceedings on Monday, with the squads taking to hard wickets at Princess Park and Victory Park in order to ensure play was able to be completed.

The hosts got off to a flyer against St Gregory's, chasing down 8-144 with seven wickets in hand thanks largely to a swashbuckling 87 not out from Cooper Delahey.

Sanjiv Weerasingham (49) and Liam Sutton (33) did most of the heavy lifting with the bat in the first innings for St Gregory's, with Will Russell (2-24) the pick of the bowlers for Notre Dame.

Jayden Dhosi (21) and Ned Walters (18 not out) provided great foils for Delahey in the successful chase of 3-145 from 17 overs.

In the other qualifying clash, Marist College made 3-139 on the back of 58 retired not out from Chris Cox, but was no match for the batting prowess of St Joseph's.

George Martin (57 not out) and Will Maffey (54 retired not out) led the way as the chasing side racked up 0-145 from 19 overs.

The final between Notre Dame and St Joseph's was a thrilling encounter, with the latter snaring victory with one delivery remaining in the contest.

Xavier Hutchison (56 retired not out) helped steer the hosts to 8-158 before Will Burnett (51 retired not out) and Ben Jones (52) did the damage for the eventual victors.

Dhosi (3-23) was the pick of the bowlers in the fixture.

In the third against fourth battle, Josh Shipley (St Gregory's) starred with 47 in a total of 8-210 before Alister Brasher (33) top-scored for Marist College in an unsuccessful chase.

The 50-over portion of the competition began yesterday, with action to be found at Murchison Recreation Reserve and Central Park Recreation Reserve today, Mooroopna Recreation Reserve tomorrow and Central Park and Vibert Reserve on Friday.
