The certified and emerging Kyabram sporting champions had an absolute day out, scoring 114 and 105 respectively as the Redbacks scored 7-348 from 80 overs at Kyabram Recreation Reserve.
The huge total sets the Redbacks up for a tilt at an outright victory this weekend against a struggling Tatura line-up that has only batted out 45 overs once this season.
Remarkably, Kyabram found itself 2-11 after Paul Parsons (duck) and Cade Mueller (five) failed to cash in on ideal batting conditions.
Troy Thomson (15) also went cheaply with the Redbacks 3-50, but Newman and Kyle Mueller took over and batted the opposition out of the game.
After they were dismissed, new Irish important Aaron Gillespie got the chance to show what he was made of, cracking 46 off 69 balls to look the goods in the middle-order.
All in all, Redbacks captain Mueller said it had been a grouse day.
“It was pretty much what we set out to do, it was great we were able to tick a lot of boxes,” Mueller said.
“It's good fun to bat with someone of (Newman's) calibre, the wicket was pretty nice and the ground was nice, so it's a good score, but also what we should have made really.
“Everyone just walks a bit taller with (Newman) around and the confidence he brings you when you're batting is great. He makes the bowlers more confident too, he's just got so much knowledge to draw from and you do feel a bit taller with him around.”
The century was Mueller's fourth career Haisman Shield ton and Newman's third, with his other two coming during the 2011-12 season when he played with Old Students.
Mueller said his bowlers had plenty to work with this weekend.
“It's a really nice start, we haven't played any two-day cricket yet, so it's a nice way to ease into it and good for our bowlers to have a few runs to play with next weekend,” he said.
THE GAME
Kyabram 7-348 (Paul Newman 114, Kyle Mueller 105, Jayden Armstrong 2-97) v Tatura
STAR PLAYER
Paul Newman (Kyabram): Having opened in the Redbacks’ first four games, Newman enjoyed sliding down the order, smacking a ton batting at No.5. With 242 runs at 48.4, it's fair to say Newman has started his time at Kyabram brilliantly
